The Morne is a promontory of the Island of Maurice, on which a population of escaped slaves hid after fleeing their plantations, first belonging to some French owners, later to the English ones. One day, a detachment of English soldiers climbed the promontory. Thinking that they wanted to capture them, the fugitives committed a massive suicide. The truth is that the soldiers had come to claim the end of the slavery.
