Based on the conflict in the heart of the Roman Catholic Church of the XVII century, this play presents the opposition between the official doctrine and the new ideology of Cornelius Jansen. On August 27, 1664, the Archbishop of Paris comes to Port Royal to force the nuns to recant their views. But some of the sisters refuse. Port Royal disappears and “Jansenism” as well.
In this play, Henry de Montherlant focuses on portraying exceptional female characters. He presents their strengths and their weakness. It’s a world of women raised against the world controlled by men. Port Royal is a play about the struggle for freedom of cult and the freedom of thought.
