Some French Resistance fighters are arrested by the Vichy Government Police. They know that they will be tortured as long as they have not given the name of their leader. Before being questioned, each one of them ponders over the different possible choices : shall I scream ? talk ? save my life ? or jump out the window ? Each man’s life will depend on his response. Jean-Paul Sartre ascribes to these questions a philosophic foundation. In his opinion, everything in this life is matter of choice. No one is a coward or a hero by nature. The so-called “coward” has turned cowardly, and the supposed “hero” has turned heroic.
