Leontes, King of Sicily, and his wife Hermione, have invited to their court their friend, Polixenes, King of Bohemia. Polixenes, whose stay is soon to be over, announces his intention to return to his country. Leontes urges his wife to beg him to stay. She is successful as to make Leontes suspect an aff air between them. He succumbs to jealousy and instructs Camillo, his counsellor, to murder Polixenes, while his wife is to be put in jail. Hermione, in prison, gives birth to a baby-daughter, Perdita, whom Leontes orders to be abandoned. Camillo refuses to assassinate Polixenes and joins him in his escape. The queen is eventually shown innocent but... too late ! She is dead. Leontes having acknowledged his mistake and falls into despair. The tragedy seems total.
But Perdita, the baby-daughter abandoned on the coast of Bohemia, has been found and saved by a peasant. Sixteen years later... the second part of the play begins in pastoral scenery. Florizel, the King of Bohemia’s son, falls in love with Perdita, who has grown into a pretty shepherdess. The King is of course opposed to the marriage so the two young people run away to Sicily. Polixenes will eventually join them. And now...
A street parade will precede the performance. It will start from the Jardin de Ville. A regal procession will lead all the characters of the play through the streets of the Town Centre up to the Théâtre de Verdure (Open air theatre) close to the museum.
