The 21st Rencontres of the Young European Theater is organized around the theme of Reconciliation, in collaboration with the International Year of Unesco.
This theme is part of the reflection that we made in 2008 around "Oresteia" of Aeschylus.
We remembered that at the end of "Oresteia", Athena having obtained from the citizens' court the acquittal of Orestes, the Erinyes, who claim revenge in the name of Clytemnestra, are dismissed. Therefore, they can believe themselves to be defeated and driven out of the city. Athena then proposes to them to become the Eumenides (Benevolent), those who will look after the families of Athens. Athena thereby realised their integration and puts an end to the conflict that threatened the future of an unpredictable developments.
It is this process of reconciliation that we would like to tackle during this 21st edition.
The history of Europe is full of rifts which, peace being restored, have necessitated a long process of reparation and care to achieve a living together that is more than a juxtaposition. Think of the Second World War, Communism, Francoism, Greek colonels, the Algerian War and more recently the Balkan conflict ...
The history of the individuals is a recovery continuously renewed of these conflicts: internal conflicts, conflicts of couples, conflicts of classes, conflicts of religions,... The matter does not miss.
It is about this scenario with thousands of variations that will be discussed in these Rencontres. We will tackle it through various modalities:
- The staging of Shakespeare's "Winter’s Tale" for the closing show on Saturday, July 11, 2009 at 10pm in the streets of Grenoble and the Théâtre de Verdure.
- The Grand Debate of Wednesday, July 8, 2009 at the Auditorium of the Museum with a group of speakers including Bartold Bierens de Haan.
- The publication of a special file in the Revue des Rencontres 2009, a file made up of contributions of directors, writers and artists from all the Young European Theater Network.
The 2009 Rencontre will mark a date "1989-2009: Twenty years". Twenty years from the collapse of one world to the birth of another. On this occasion, we will publish a book of history and reflection under the direction of Thérèse Cousin: "1989-2009: Twenty years of Rencontres". At the same time Aline Holcman will make a film.
To all this is added shows, workshops, cafes-debates. There is also the international exchange that is forging more and more stronger links between the European and non-European members of the Young European Theater Network.
These 21st Rencontres be a sign of great wealth, enthusiastic, in a world whose need for beauty and meaning is becoming stronger.
