Père Ubu is a captain of the Dragoons, in King Venceslas
of Poland’s service. On his wife advice, he betrays him and usurps his
throne, with Bordure’s help, who is the captain of the guard. During a
parade, he murders Venceslas and two of his sons. After that coup
d’Etat, he becomes a man eager for power and wealth, who slaughters
everyone on his path, without realizing how bad it is... His only
preoccupation is getting richer and richer, and he commits so many
atrocities that even Mère Ubu becomes scared of it : he doubles taxes
and collects them himself, kills all noblemen to take over their wealth.
He is a King, and a King has is allowed to do anything.
Through satire, this play is a virulent criticism of the specious pretexts used to justify war...
