After the gentry’s rebellion, the governor of a city is
killed. His wife flees, leaving her young son. Gruche, the servant,
takes in the child and decides to take refuge in her brother’s house, in
the mountains. During the tiring journey, she starts adopting the young
boy. Her brother and his wife don’t welcome them as well as she
thought. Gruche is married to a farmer, supposed sick, in order to make
him the young boy’s father.
The previous government takes the power again, and the governor’s wife,
who needs a heir to get her properties back, sends for him. She takes
legal action to determine who is the boy’s “real” mother.
Like in Salomon’s legend, the judge decides to test the two women
obliging them to tear the child off a circle, in order to understand
which one is his real mother.
