Sarah Baartman, a young\r\nstrangely shaped African girl, was taken away from her native country, shipped\r\nto London and Paris, to be exhibited as if she were a freak. Exploited in\r\nappalling circumstances which led to a trial in court, she became a scientific\r\ncase and gained fame until her death in 1815. Scientists recovered her corpse,\r\nand her strangely shaped body was moulded, and then exhibited at the “Muséum d’Histoire\r\nnaturelle” and then at the “Musée de l’Homme” in Paris. About two centuries\r\nafter her death, the case sprang up again as South African ethnic groups\r\ndemanded that her remains be repatriated and buried in her mother country.\r\nNowadays, Sarah who is also called Satchwé and Saarjie, lies there. Traditional\r\nand contemporary dance is used to stress the heroine’s identity and body\r\nalteration. This new production is thus giving “the African woman” a voice, for\r\nher to defend herself against all the theories regarding her life.
