TIMETABLES : At 8:30pm - PLACE : Prémol Theatre - Grenoble
Shen-Te, a young prostitute, is given some money by 3 chinese gods so that she can do good works with it. She wants to help everyone but quickly finds herself exploited by them all. In order to survive, she invents another identity for herself, her cousin Chui-Ta, a hard-hearted character (she is the one behind the mask)...as it is not possible to be good in this world. Brecht adapted this parable of Eastern origin for modern western theatre. The effects of distance, a practise so dear to Brecht’s heart, are conveyed here by the constant presence of the gods and the water seller. The audience sees an interplay between the characters in which they interrupt the play from time to time to talk about themselves.
