The show
Tig (Antigone) works in a night club with her sister Esme (Ismene). Creo (Creon) is the leader of the gang who rules the city (Thebes) after Eto and Orrin (Eteocles and Polynice), Tig and Esme’s brothers, killed each other. Creo forbids Orrin to be buried because, pursuing his seek of power against his brother, he had joined another gang. Tig cannot accept this. She claims every human being’s right to be buried with respect. So she transgresses the gang’s order and values. The Greek tragedy is therefore renewed in a contemporary setting.
Theatre Company
Mandala Theatre Company is an Oxford based Community Interest Company (CIC) that uses the power of theatre to change lives, build community and foster social justice. We aim to connect people, enabling them to become global citizens through the arts.
Central to Mandala as a diversity-led company is:
- Visceral theatre that is relevant, giving a voice to those whose stories are not heard and making them visible.
- The employment and training of young performers from ethnically and socio-economically diverse backgrounds, in the pedagogy of theatre for social justice.
- Theatre that exposes mainstream audiences to situations and stories they are unlikely to have heard, also taking it into the heart of the communities whose experience this is.
