Young king Admetus has to die. God Apollo, his protector, grants him life if someone accepts to die in his place. Only Alcestis, Admetus’ wife, accepts to do it. So she dies. The palace cries her loss and the king is desperate. This is when Heracles arrives. He hears of what had happened. Shattered by the love Alcestis has shown, Heracles goes down to Hades and brings her back among the living.
