After the destruction of Troy by the Greeks, Aeneas and his companions run away. They arrive in Cumae, near Napoli. Aeneas meets with the Sybil who accepts to bring him to the Underworld where he wishes to meet the soul of his father, Anchise.
After facing Charon and crossing the Acheron, Aeneas finds Dido, Queen of Carthage, in the Mourning Fields; she desperately killed herself after he left her. Aeneas also finds his cousin, Deiphobus, whom Helen, who had become his wife, got murdered. Aeneas finally gets to Elysium; this is when Anchise predicts that Aeneas will found Rome and that the latter would become the new Troy.
Aeneas, who has returned to the Earth’s surface, now knows that he has got a mission to carry out. In peace with his past, he can look toward his future.
