Ivanov is about thirty years old. Landowner, active and intellectually seductive, he is also riddled with debts. Despite his love for his wife Anna, who is very ill, he is not happy. Actually, he is cruelly bored and he cannot recognize the man he used to be any longer: a young man with ideals committed to making a difference. However, the world has not changed, at least not as he would have liked it to. He did not realize how routine had settled in his life and how resignation had taken over. In order to entertain himself, he spends his evenings at the Lebedev’s, his wealthy neighbours who regularly organize parties and who have a 20 year-old daughter named Sacha. A love affair begins between Sacha and Ivanov which makes Ivanov very nostalgic of his own youth...
